Coming Up: Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023

Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023

The Mona Lisa, American Gothic, The Son of Man, Scream or Andy Warhol’s pop art pieces can all be used as inspiration for the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens’ Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023 coming up in October!

About Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023

In case you hadn’t heard the exciting news, the theme for Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023 has been announced. This year, the theme is broad and bold. For the 19th Annual Scarecrows in the Gardens, think “Scarecrows Imitate Art!”

As usual, before visitors can walk among the art-inspired scarecrows, the community is invited to participate. Each year, local families, schools, businesses, clubs, organizations and others register for the chance to display a handcrafted scarecrow of their own.

Scarecrow designers will need to dig deep and look for inspiration from famous art pieces. If the sheer number of choices—with art spanning the decades and featuring a variety of styles—is overwhelming, fear not!

The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens suggests visiting Google Arts and Culture for inspiration. You can also do a simple search for key phrases like “famous paintings of scarecrows,” for example, for more creative ideas.

But remember, the event is for all ages and is family-friendly, so please be considerate of the audience when you create your scarecrow masterpiece.

More about the event

Are you interested in showing off your creative side with an art deco scarecrow, for instance? Luckily, the entry deadline isn’t until Friday, September 15th.

Unless you are a school group or a class, there is a $20 entry fee for each scarecrow. Once your scarecrow is complete, you can set it up in the gardens starting Monday, September 18th, through Tuesday, September 29th. So, you still have plenty of time to get crafting!

In the end, more than 30 scarecrows will be scattered throughout the gardens. And save the date for free gate admission on Sunday, October 1st, from 3 to 6 p.m. This is also when visitors can vote for the “People’s Choice Award.”

Location

Scarecrows in the Gardens 2023 will be at the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, located at 5130 Headland Ave. Get social and connect with Gardens on Facebook and Instagram for more news, including event information.
