If all goes according to plan, things are about to get sporty on the west side of town. The city recently announced plans for sports facility upgrades in Dothan that would lead to more athletic opportunities.
In the news
What was once Grandview Elementary School will soon be new sporting fields. Last month, city officials shared news of an exciting partnership.
Currently there are about five open acres behind the old elementary school located at 900 Sixth Ave. Plans for the space include a new $1.7 million, 120-yard artificial turf field. In turn, the field could be converted into three 70 x 30-yard flag football fields.
More on future upgrades
Additional sports facility upgrades in Dothan involve the Wiregrass Recreation Center. The center is located at 620 Sixth Ave.
According to reports, crews will level the existing baseball fields. Then work can begin on constructing six 70 x 30 multi-purpose fields.
These fields could be used for a number of sporting events. For example, soccer, football and frisbee match-ups could all be played on the fields.
In the future, the city hopes to host a variety of tournaments such as the NFL Flag Football Bowl, for instance.
City officials are hoping construction will begin on the sports facility upgrades in Dothan early next year.
Along with the new fields, other improvements are planned. Those include extra parking, new concession areas and new bathrooms as well.
In the end, Dothan will have a total of nine new sporting fields and more sporty opportunities.
